What is the cost for the class?
I charge $75 for the class. I may not be the cheapest, but I am definitely not the most expensive. Active duty and Retired military will be going through the whole class just like everyone else.
What does that cost cover?
The $75 covers the classroom, all paperwork, fingerprints (if needed), drinks & snacks.
I also provide lunch.
There is no longer an application fee for SLED.
Who should attend the CWP class?
In my opinion this class is for people who have been shooting for a while and are familiar with the basics of firearms safety and handling. Individuals who are ready to go to the next level and begin carrying a firearm in public.
This is not a beginner shooter class. If you have never held or fired a handgun before, this is not the class for you. I do offer a beginner shooter class, please call or email me for info.
Do you do all the fingerprinting and photos that are to be turned in with the application?
I have been certified by SLED to take fingerprints. Fingerprints are included in the cost of the class if you need to send hard copy application.
You also have the option of using IdentoGo and submit fingerprints electronically. This can possibly shorten the time to get your permit back.
What are the times of the class?
Right now my Saturday or Sunday classes are from 9am-5pm. Fall and winter classes start at 8am due to the earlier sunset. I am more than willing to work with anyone's schedule. As long as my schedule is open I am flexible.
Where are the classes held?
The classroom portion is held at the Richland County Sheriff's Department Region 1 substation. Located next to Lower Richland High School. The shooting portion is done at my house which is about 5mi from LR High School. We will convoy to that location after the classroom portion is complete.
The address for Lower Richland High School is - 2615 Lower Richland Blvd. Hopkins SC - for those who use a GPS
From I-77 take exit 9B East towards Sumter Go about 5 1/2 miles then Left on Lower Richland Blvd. Go past the school and turn Right into the back parking lot. Sheriff's office is the building on the Left.
How many rounds do we need to bring?
I recommend 100 rounds. The test requires 50 rounds with a minimum 35 on target to pass. The other rounds will be for some practice prior to the shooting test, time permitting. Any other rounds can be used after testing.
Do you forward the applications to SLED or is it up to the students?
You have 3 years from the class date to turn in your paperwork. However your paper fingerprints are only good for 6 months. You can also use IdentoGo to submit. I provide a self addressed envelope for you to mail. You will have to provide proper postage for that.
How long will it take to get my permit?
This is the million dollar question. SLED says on their answering machine, do not even bother asking unless it has been at least 100 days. I have seen it take less time, but I have also seen it take longer.
What else do I need to bring?
The shooting portion does require some shooting from the holster. A hip holster is required. No shoulder holsters.
If you would like to use an ankle holster that would be ok as well. I also have eye and ear protection. You are welcome to bring your own if you like.
