Just so you know, I do not consider myself a Prepper or a gun nut. However i do feel that there are a few skills that everyone needs to know inn case certain circumstances were to occur.
While teaching First Aid and SAR skills I always stress the need to all for a "GO BAG" or "BUG OUT BAG". Every one of your vehicles should have a simple one and you should have a proper one at your house.
During SAR operations we also call it a "SAR READY PACK". I have put together a spreadsheet with a basic listing of what is usually in them. Some of our searches were on horseback so you will see some references to horse related equipment.
During some of our searches those buying cheap packs paid the price. During a pre search pack inspection, all items were accounted for, they were just thrown in a pack and thru the course of the search bags got ripped, zippers got broken, and you would think someone was having a yard sale there was so much stuff scattered over the area.
I decided to group items by function, using quart freezer bags, was able to come up with a better way to store items. All bags are numbered so that if another person needs an item you can go straight to that numbered bag and not have to dig for items.
The "SAR READY PACK" spreadsheet is on the Downloads page.
You can customize this anyway you like, and I encourage you to.
1. NOBODY IS COMING TO SAVE YOU.
Whether an event lasts a few seconds, a few hours, or even a few days – You have to work as though nobody is coming to save you.
2. YOU ARE YOUR SAVIOR
So start working because EVERYTHING IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.
You are your security, you are your medic, you are your rescuer.
3. You are your own best resource to SAVE WHO NEEDS TO BE SAVED.
Nobody wants to save your life more than you, so set yourself up for success by having the simple tools and knowledge to do so: do what you can with what you have.
Recognize that nobody is in a better position to start saving your life than you.
4. Sometimes saving lives means you have to KILL WHO NEEDS TO BE KILLED.
"The more effective you are at taking a life, the more successful you’ll be at saving one”
Be swift, be decisive, be final.
5. ALWAYS BE WORKING.
There is always something you can be doing to improve your position.
Always.
